The roots of the Groves & Chizek Law Office date back to 1870 when John L. Kamrar formed a partnership with David D. Miracle to practice law in Webster City, Iowa. After Mr. Miracle was elected as Judge to the Iowa District Court in 1880, Mr. Kamrar continued his extensive solo law practice until 1905 when he became associated in partnership with Edward D. Prince. The partnership was dissolved in 1908, at which time Mr. Kamrar moved his law office to his newly constructed building at 805 Des Moines Street in downtown Webster City.
In 1912, Mr. Kamrar became associated with Attorney Robert G. Remley. This partnership continued until 1920, when Mr. Kamrar was elected to a judgeship on the Iowa District Court. Following Mr. Kamrar's judgeship, Mr. Remley purchased the Kamrar Building at 805 Des Moines Street in 1920 and continued as a sole practitioner until 1963 when Attorney Gary J. Groves joined him in an association of sole practitioners.
Mr. Groves purchased the Kamrar Building in 1970 and continued the association until Mr. Remley’s death in 1985. Thereafter, Mr. Groves continued as a sole practitioner until 2014, at which time he and Zachary Chizek, a graduate of the Drake University School of Law, formed an association known as Groves & Chizek Law Office.
The location of the law office was moved in May 2019 to 1620 Superior Street in Webster City. Although this may have ended more than 110 years of law offices located at 805 Des Moines Street, the history of the law practice that dates back to 1870 continues to exist today.
